Literature is reviewed on the background of the financial crisis, the difference between fair value accounting and traditional historical cost accounting, the levels of financial assets, etc. The methods of the research are based on secondary data including the analysis of financial statements of the UK banks, i.e. RBS, HSBC, Lloyds, and Barclay, and the valuation of their financial assets for 2007-2008. Conclusions are made about the contradictory nature of the fair value accounting arguing that it could have contributed to the spread of the current crisis.
