The dissertation investigates the origins of the sub-prime mortgage crisis and its effect on the banking sector in the UK. Literature is reviewed on economic business cycles, bank credit cycles, international capital flows under globalization, the causes of the sub-prime mortgage crisis, the process of securisation, etc. A case study of the leading UK banks is conducted including Northern Rock, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, Barclays Bank and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). The research methods are based on qualitative and quantitative analysis of secondary data collected from the banks’ annual reports to evaluate their performance in the pre-crisis and post-crisis period. Conclusions are made about the effects of the housing market crisis on the profitability of major banks in the UK.
