The dissertation investigates the effect of the current economic recession on employee motivation and performance productivity in the construction industry of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) using a case study of the construction group HiTEch. Literature is reviewed on the background of the UAE construction industry during the construction boom and the economic recession that followed, the labour laws and working conditions within the industry, the background of the HiTech Group, the problems of human resource (HR) related to redundancies, the theories of motivation, etc. The methods of secondary research are combined with the methods of primary research based on the questionnaire distributed among 30 HiTEch managers and employees to examine their perceptions of job insecurity and its effect on employee motivation. Conclusions are made about the link between the levels of current performance, motivation and job turnover in HiTech employees as compared to their competitors.

The dissertation examines the impact of recent redundancies across the construction industry of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) upon the managers’ and employees’ motivation. The background of the job losses in the UAE construction industry is described from the economic, financial and legal perspectives. Literature is reviewed on the causes of the recession in the construction industry, the psychological impacts of job loss, the theories of motivation within organisational context, etc. A case study of staff motivation in HiTech Company is conducted using the methods of qualitative and quantitative research based on secondary and primary data collected via a questionnaire. Conclusions are made about the motivation drivers in the period of economic recession and the methods that might increase employee motivation and performance in the construction industry of the UAE.
