This paper analyses the statement “Companies only provide products that consumers want and it is the responsibility of the individual consumer to weigh-up any harmful effects of those products on themselves and society.” The introduction lists a variety of perspectives that the paper will utilise, including egoism, social relativism, deontology, and care perspective, to name a few. This view is discussed in view of the consumer and the company, discussing the various ethical perspectives. Two case studies are used to develop the argument, Toyota and their recall of Lexus, Prius, Camry, and corolla models and Google’s decision to stop its censorship in China. The paper concludes with a summary of the topics discussed in relation to the above statement.
