This report considers the case of Dell and the role the Management Information System (MIS) has played in the configuration of Dell’s global supply chain and the implementation of new technological systems to support supply chain efficiencies. The paper highlights the teething problems that Dell had in its information systems (IS) when implementing its build-to-order business model. The problems crossed customer relationship marketing (CRM), enterprise resource planning (ERP) and radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies, which caused a number of disruptions in the supply chain and a raft of poor customer experiences. However, the report also illustrates how the company is improving these technologies and in so doing, streamlining the supply chain and strengthening its build-to-order model to meet industry best practices.
