There has been much research carried out in order to understand the life and growth of an organization. It is important to understand how organizations grow and create a framework that can act as a guide for other growing businesses. Stages Models of Growth were developed to show the phases that an organization goes through to grow. This report looks at some of these models including Churchill and Lewis (1983), Scott and Bruce (1987), Kazanjian and Drazin (1990), Flamholtz (1990), Eggers, Leahy and Churchill (1994), Lippitt and Schmidt (1967), Greiner (1972) and Kazanjian (1989). It splits them into two groups, the first group that describes how managers respond to a crisis in order to grow (reactive) and the second group that describes how managers think ahead and grow to avoid a crisis (proactive). Two models are used to show the growth of Carluccios caf?/deli, these models are Flamholtz (1990) and Churchill and Lewis (1983) as Carluccios did not face any major crises and were proactive in their management and growth style. The report finishes with criticisms of some of the Stages Models of Growth.
