The dissertation investigates the effects of work-life balance (WLB) on companies' productivity. Literature is reviewed on the history and evolution of the WLB concept, national and EU policies towards WLB, legal frameworks of WLB, approach to WLB in Ireland, positive and negative opinions about WLB, etc. Research philosophy, ethics, approaches and methods are described highlighting advantages and disadvantages of qualitative and quantitative analysis and reflecting step-by-step work at the dissertation project. A study is conducted of the financial data and WLB practices of British Telecom, Lloyds TSB, Marks and Spencer, and Unilever. Secondary research is combined with primary research techniques based on questionnaires, interviews and structured observation. Conclusions are made about whether the analysed companies make WLB policies profitable.
