This dissertation discusses the theory and practice of hedging in financial risks. The objectives are to critically examine the different types of hedging techniques and how they are practically utilised, to determine the nature of transactions for which hedging is utilised and the common types of hedging techniques that are used in hedging financial transactions, and to critically examine the prevalence of hedging among a sample of FTSE 100 companies and how this is applied practically as opposed to theory. The review of literature discusses a range of topics, some of which include taxation benefits, reduction in agency costs, and different hedging tools and techniques. The methodology is then provided, which details the data collection methods used for the study. Lloyds banking group and British Petroleum (BP) are used as case studies, and the paper details the forms of hedges used by these organisations. The study carries out an analysis of the results from the data collection methods, and evaluates them in detail.

This dissertation focuses on the causes of the B.P. oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, and aims to identify the consequences the firm faces, as well as the extent to which BP can mitigate these effects for the future. The objectives are to gather background information concerning the B.P oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, including the scale of the disaster, to identify the causes of the leak including the organisations involved, to assess the adequacy of the company’s risk management arrangements in these matters, to identify the consequences faced by BP, including its effect on the shareholders, and its impact on public perception and brand image, and to assess the extent to which BP can mitigate these effects for the future, and recommend policies to avoid future accidents. The review of literature presents an overview of the company and of the oil leak, as well as the causes. The amount the leak cost is assessed, and the study aims to examine the extent to which BP was prepared. The literature review also examines the Four Phase Process of Emergency Management, Dan’s Process of Brand Re-building, and Elwood’s process to mitigate the consequences. This detailed literature review is followed by the methodology, and the findings from the data collection methods used. All of the findings are analysed, and the study concludes with recommendations.
