The paper examines the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in historical and business contexts of the oil industry. Examples of poor CSR implementation are discussed including the disaster of British Petroleum (BP) oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The importance of commitment to CSR is emphasised arguing that CSR is more than public relations (PR) policy.
