The dissertation looks into the causes and impacts of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico known as Deepwater Horizon accident, assessing the damage inflicted by the disaster on British Petroleum (BP) and evaluating the role of risk management practices within the organisation. Literature is reviewed on the BP Deepwater Horizon accident, the flaws of risk management, the role of management in risk reporting, the models of risk management, etc. The study is based on secondary research and primary research conducted via email interviews with fifty people working at BP. Conclusions are made about the risk management practices at BP suggesting recommendations about the ways to regain BP business strength in the global oil market.
