This paper deals with how conceptions of disability have changed in society over time. The paper begins by attempting to define disability, which is currently a problematic area. It describes a shift from a dependency, or medical, model of disability towards a more social model. Historical attitudes to disability are also dealt with, from schools to the labour market.
