The paper examines the impact of the Cold War geopolitics on the development theories of modernisation and dependency. The conflicting ideologies of the United States and the Soviet Union are reviewed; the consequences of the breakdown of colonial relationships are considered; the concept of the European Enlightenment is discussed.
