S/P/356. The last two decades have seen the emergence of myriad social movements in the 'South' that articulate struggles for political autonomy, cultural, ecological and economic survival. With reference to examples, outline why it is important for geographers to study these social movements?

The paper examines the scope of human geography research into the social movements (SM) that seek political autonomy within the global 'South'. Definitions of SM and 'space' as a social construction are presented; examples of SM in Mexico, Nigeria, Brazil, etc. are analysed.
