The paper examines the approaches to evolution and degeneration in late Victorian Britain reviewing the pessimism over the future of society, the problems of urbanisation, the implications of DarwinŒs theory, the moral and physical decline of human civilisation, etc. Social and political developments of the period are described including the emergence of regular schooling, political demonstrations, city police, etc.
