(2003, 6500 words)
This paper will discuss the meanings of this term Subculture in relation to the period of the late eighties, a time in which political and social change encouraged people to start their own business, (and a quote about the eighties) and look at some of the theories surrounding it. The subculture that was documented at this time was known as rave and the music associated with it ranges from the early days of Chicago house to the more later genres of dance music. For simplicity, house music and club cultures shall be referred to as 'Rave' and rave music, the activity of dancing with a DJ present, whether in a warehouse, a club or an outdoor event, from acid house party of 1987 to a commercial monkey making event like 'Creamfeilds'. The use of illegal substances is likely but not essential and the music tends to be of an electronic kind. Conclusion: This essay has documented a recent music culture and style. House music has paved the way for many other sub genres and styles have been born, and although it owes to disco music greatly, there has not been such as inspiring form of music that has not descended from house music. My reasons for using this genre of music for the study of subcultures relevance in music are as follows; Rap music and hip hop culture, although seen as alternative. Is actually superficial, homophobic and capitalistic, it has been described in some texts as 'post modern' Rock music was perhaps one of the first forms of commercial music, and the analysis which be much like that of the teds and rock and roll. Punk music is still influential today, and although it's constantly argued that it resists the mainstream, it is clearly marketed for commercial success. All the influential punk bands were signed to major labels, and all enjoyed chart success. The attitude of punk remains today and this attitude as insipid many forms of music, with genuine independent and underground movements in the seventies, eighties and nineties.
