P/B/465. Tesco vs. Sainsburys: who is doing better and why?
(2006, 3500 words)
The report looks at the performance of two major UK-based supermarket groups: Tesco plc and J Sainsbury plc. The author analyses the companies accounts, calculates ratios (profitability, gearing, liquidity, investor), and makes conclusions as to which company is performing better and for what reasons. The report then examines the companies marketing strategies and operations to reveal areas of excellence and gaps for potential improvement. Where appropriate, recommendations are given pertaining to enhancing marketing and operations efforts. On the basis of the analysis, the author concludes on the market standing of the both companies in terms of their financial results, share behaviour, and the level of success of their strategies. Both Annual Reports and more recent, 2006, information are used for the purpose of this report.
