The paper opens with an overview of the Kikkoman company's history that dates back to the 6th century when soy (shoyu) was first introduced in Japan. The author then describes the company's current operating environment applying various modes of analysis: PESTEL (focusing on Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental and Legal issues), PBV (resource-based review), SWOT (analysing Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) and financial analysis covering the period from 1989 to 1995. The paper concludes that in spite of the existing problems Kikkoman is financially healthy; several recommendation are given that might ensure the company's competitive advantage.
