P/B/287. Using mobile phones while driving: pros and cons

The paper discusses the issue of using mobile phones while driving. It claims that it diverts the drivers attention from the road, since phone conversations are essentially less automated than passenger conversations. Essentially, phone tasks and driving tasks make use of different cognitive resources and do not cause much interference except while performing visual tasks, like dialling and receiving calls. The author refers to the concept of Minimal Attention User Interface according to which hands free phone devices improve the safety and user-friendliness of car systems. The methods of evaluating driving performance while dual-tasking are outlined. The paper concludes, however, that new laws should prevent the growth of technology that crosses the safety margin. Introducing new forms of driver training is suggested.
