The paper looks at the role of the tourist industry in poverty alleviation in developing countries examining whether, on the other hand, tourism can create a threat to their sustainable development. Literature review is presented on the role of tourism from the developing countries' perspective examining its impact on the economic development of African countries with the focus on Gambia.
