The paper reviews the research by Jodi O'Brien into the effects of cyberspace upon constructions of gender arguing that in an online reality binary oppositions are reinforced by the ambiguity of gender and that without the traditional visual clues to a person's gender we rely upon projections based on institutionalised gender binary oppositions. Gender differences are perceived as part of a hierarchy or value system.
