The paper examines J. S. Mill's theory of utilitarianism contrasting it with that of Bentham and discussing the concept of happiness. The meaning of utilitarianism is explored and critically examined with references to later theorists. Post-modernism is shown to serve as a challenge to the principles of utilitarianism but suggestions are made about how the two concepts could be assimilated.
