The following exploration will consider the effects of the EU expanding and opening the borders between nation-states; this particular erosion of borders has arguably led to the diminishing of state sovereignty and for Britain this is a very alarming possibility. To illustrate Britain's commitment to national sovereignty will discuss the history and political and social contentions towards joining the EU. One of the main threats is to British symbols of independence, such as the pound. The five criteria to join the Euro are pointed towards the British population's acceptance to give up some of its sovereignty for economic integration and globalization. Therefore are the five criteria and impossibility, because of Britain's resistance to the EU steeped in fears to sovereignty and antiquated notions of symbolism or is this just a popular myth?
