C/P/64. Why does the EU remain a divisive issue in British Politics?

This essay notes Britain's increasingly complex position and relationship with the EU. The EU remains a cause of divisive politics in Britain and the labour and conservative parties remain divided on Britain's exact approach to EU. In fact Britain's relations with EU have been further complicated with the Iraq war and the British-American relations as most EU member states may have a different socio-cultural attitude towards the US. This discussion draws on several research studies to show how the British government relates its policy making with that of the European Union and what are the political and social issues involved.
