The paper examines the role of operations in grocery retailing assessing operations management activities of Sainsbury's. Environmental challenges of the company are identified analysing the implementation of their performance objectives, i.e. quality, speed, flexibility, cost and dependability. The overall contribution of operations to the firm's capacity is assessed; supply chain architecture is described.
