(2005, 3800 words)
The overall aim of this report is to critically evaluate the claim that employee involvement and participation initiatives contribute to increased employee motivation, retention and increased productivity. The reports begins with classic perspectives of management and speculates on their relevance in present day, moving over towards the introduction of HRM and subsequent changes experienced by managers in respect to their leadership and management styles and perhaps considering this point of time as approximate point, when employee involvement and participation has been recognised and received growing attention. Furthermore, the report goes onto such issues and concepts as importance of employee involvement and participation in decision making, empowerment, commitment and job satisfaction, continuous improvement and innovation. The report also clearly defines the differences between employee involvement and employee participation (that it to say, that sometimes different meanings may be included in each term) as well as illustrates typologies of employee participation and cites the relevant examples.
