C/EI/15. Security concerns for online traders: Are IT managers responsible?

The paper highlights the growing concern that security presents to customers and organisations. Issues discussed include the growing complexity of technology and security requirements to manage that technology and the increasing number of security breaches amongst online traders. These include examples such as Amazon, eBay and online bank, Cahoot, which have become particularly well-known. The reasons for security concerns are outlined in some detail and then the role of managing security within organisations is discussed. The paper describes how traditionally, security has been the responsibility of IT managers, although the growing need for an organisation-wide approach to security may put this into question.
